It can involve:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Filing a tax return using another person\u2019s Social Security number.<\/li>\n<li>Claiming someone else\u2019s children as dependents.<\/li>\n<li>Claiming a tax refund using a deceased taxpayer\u2019s information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>What Are The Signs:<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li>Your Social Security number is lost, stolen or compromised.<\/li>\n<li>Your tax refund is delayed.<\/li>\n<li>You receive a notice from the IRS stating it has received a duplicate tax return filing, you have unreported income, or you and somebody else are claiming the same dependents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>What You Should Do:<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>To avoid becoming a victim of tax identity theft:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Submit your tax return as early in the tax season as possible.<\/li>\n<li>Be careful what you share \u2013\u00a0don\u2019t give out your personal information unless you know who is asking and why, and don\u2019t be shy about refusing!<\/li>\n<li>Dispose of sensitive information safely \u2013 shred it with a micro-cut shredder.<\/li>\n<li>Know your tax preparer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Check the status of your refund after filing at <a href=\"http:\/\/action.aarp.org\/site\/R?i=C3VMktmrBqBynVh1UvhKuQ\">www.irs.gov\/refunds<\/a>. If you think someone filed a fraudulent refund with your information, call the IRS Identity Theft line at 800-908-4490.
